Four Ways To Stop Overeating And Lose Extra Pounds

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 01-01-2010

Obesity is a problem that can potentially degenerate to a fatal disease. Frequently, it causes complications of the cardiovascular system, proving to be the leading cause of heart attacks. Other disorders such as diabetes, hypertension or even cancer can sometimes follow as a result of excessive body weight. Fortunately, all it takes is a set of simple measures to fight the tendency to grow obese. Losing weight can be accomplished to a reasonable extent just by cutting down on one’s food intake and stopping indiscriminate eating.

Of course, following discipline in your food habits for any extended period of time is easier said than done. However, overeating can be conquered with the right knowledge and a positive attitude. The results of such an effort are long-standing and long-term, which makes it worth your while.

Watch Your Stress Levels

It is well known that stress is one of the most prominent causes for overeating. Binge eating can sometimes be a psychological reaction to the need to counter stress. Another explanation for the phenomenon is that people are less likely to realize how much they are eating when under stress.

In extreme cases, people have been reported to eat in their sleep! When sleep walking tendencies degenerate into sleep-eating, it can mean you are suffering from severe stress. Avoiding high-pressure lifestyles and mental stress should be on the top of your list if you are serious about losing weight and fighting obesity.

Live Longer by Eating Lesser

Under normal circumstances, you can be forgiven for being particularly fond of food. This is normal and understandable. However, when the love for food grows into an obsession, it should set your alarm bells ringing. The cardinal rule of losing weight is to be moderate in your food consumption. It is age-old wisdom to eat only as much as is required – a counsel not many care to follow today.

Eat Before You Go To A Party

Traditionally, young women were advised to satiate their hunger first before going to a party, just so they wouldn’t run the risk of overeating at the party. Perhaps it still is a sound piece of advice. The idea is to avoid eating too much in all the excitement of meeting people and consuming more calories than you burn in the bargain.

Overeating at parties is a common and understandable issue since it is easy to gorge on too much without realizing it, amidst all the socializing and talking. Go to the party on a half-full stomach and you can be sure you won’t overeat. If the food is really tempting, don’t just stand around the table. Instead, ‘flutter’ around like a butterfly and mingle with people.

Know Your Calories

Educate yourself on how many calories you need to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Your calorie requirement is based on your age, gender, lifestyle, and a host of other factors. There are lots of resources on the internet which help you understand your actual requirement. Make sure you don’t consistently consume more calories than you burn. On most food items, you can find their nutrition content and calorie information. Developing a habit of checking how many calories you consume on a regular basis will ensure you don’t run into obesity problems. We all know that prevention is better than cure.

Calorie-intake and Childhood Obesity

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 30-12-2009

Calorie

According to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC), a calorie is a unit of energy which is supplied by food. All foods contain calories, and as units have the same effect whether it is fats, carbohydrates, proteins or sugars. Gaining excessive weight occurs because the intake of calories is more than the calories burned. This is usually a result of overeating, excessive snacking, consuming high calorie foods or drinks, including sodas and milk, without adequate physical activities to burn off the calories.

To maintain a normal weight the use of the Caloric Balance Equation is necessary. This equation is based firstly on the belief that individuals are overweight and obese due to an energy imbalance. This is caused by the consumption of too many calories but too little physical activity. Secondly, an individual’s body weight is linked with their genes, metabolism, behavior, environment, culture and socioeconomic status. Thirdly, weight gain and obesity is associated with behavior and the environment.

Balancing calories is essential in maintaining or losing weight. Each meal must be weighed against its calorie content. It also limits the calories that should be consumed during the rest of that day. The time of day that meals are eaten is also important, because high calorie meals are best eaten during the day rather than at nights, because the body is more active during the day.

The socio-economic situation of the individual also plays a major role in dieting. Fruits and vegetables contain lesser calories than carbohydrates, so meals should be balanced, consisting of more fruits and vegetables than carbohydrates. However, dieting can be expensive so many people are forced to prepare carbohydrate meals and protein, rather than substituting the carbohydrates with vegetables. A family with a limited budget, spend most of their time trying to make ends meet, preparing pastas, and rice because it will serve more people and far less expensive, even though it contains more calories.

Calorie intake is one of the many factors that cause obesity, and although not the only factor in weight gain is just as important as genetics, metabolism and physical activities. Skipping meals is not dieting and parents need to spend time educating their children on eating properly, not only what they eat, but also when and how often.

It will never be easy to get children to diet, unless it becomes a family effort. This will make it easier for the children, because the menu will change for all family members instead of the child only. Many people need to lose a few pounds anyway, so everyone will be winners in the end.

Panic Buttons For Seniors-A Crucial Must-Have For Seniors Living By Themselves

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 29-12-2009

If you are a senior who lives alone, you face a few more challenges in maintaining the independence and security you desire. One of these greatest challenges is making sure you have a good support system in place in case of a medical emergency.

For many seniors, that means having phone numbers available of friends and family. That’s all well and good, but is it enough? What happens if you’re faced with a sudden medical crisis? Are you sure the friends or family will be available at any time? What if you’re unable to reach the telephone?

These are serious questions you need to be asking yourself. I’m a senior and I know that as we get older, we need to take a few extra precautions in order to stay safe. There’s no sense in not doing so.

One of the best ways to help maintain your independence at home is having a proven emergency senior alarm available. With a simple push of a button, you are connected with a trained Care Specialist who can summon the help you need and do it quickly. It’s like having someone there with you at all times.

When you consider using a medical response service, remember, they are not the same. The price and level of service can vary wildly. It’s best to eliminate the very low-cost ones. In time of crisis, the last thing you need is a service that can’t deliver when you need it. Many don’t operate 24/7-365 days a year and don’t give you a live operator to communicate with. Many other companies, while giving adequate service are simply overpriced. You can get professional and fast service without paying a premium for it.

Many seniors have medical emergencies involving falling. In fact, one third of seniors over the age of 65 suffer falls each year and many of those occur while in the shower. The alarm panic button you have, needs to be waterproof, so you can even use it while taking a bath or shower. You should have the choice of being able to use the senior emergency button as a necklace, wristband, or as a clip-on to your belt.

Another very important consideration when looking at medical response systems, is the level of training the person has who is taking your call. He or she should receive complete training to be able to provide the highest level of assistance available.

The company you use, should also have it’s own monitoring center. Very few do, as most companies out-source these important services. It’s vital to have a well trained, supervised staff available to assist you.

What about the service agreement? Are you committed to a long-term agreement that can’t be broken regardless of circumstances? You should have a month to month agreement that can be cancelled if desired, without any penalty. Make sure also, that there are no hidden charges that can be assessed. You should not have to pay any up-front costs and there should be no increase in fees as long as you are a customer.

Choosing the right medical alert monitoring company is very important when you’re looking for the solution that helps provide your security and independence. No need to wait any longer.

Donald J. Johnson is a senior with interests in topics that affect and are of value to other seniors.

Today, over 6 million seniors live alone. Many by choice, but some through other circumstances over which they have little or no control. Regardless, as seniors, we face increasing challenges as we get older. One of these challenges is being able to receive prompt assistance if we need it. Sometimes a neighbor or relative may be able to provide that assistance. But, you would normally have to be able to reach a phone in order to contact them. What if you can’t reach that phone? Or, what if they aren’t there to answer your call? In an emergency situation, why take the chance?

Why not use a proven, affordable way to get the help you need, through a company you can trust? See http://seniorzing.com/alert for more information on medical alarm systems. Remember, you are under no obligation at all and you automatically have a 30 day trial period to start with. Nothing to hold you back. Why not try it?

New Ankle Ligament Injury Rehab

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 28-12-2009

The most typical type of ankle sprain is commonly known as an inversion sprain where the ankle turns over so that the sole of the foot faces inwards. When this kind of ankle sprain happens, the outer, or lateral ligaments are stretched too far and damaged. About 90% of ankle sprains are an ankle ligament injury. Agony is always on the exterior of the ankle, and there is customarily no pain on the inside of the ankle joint.
Why does this happen at all? Typically, ankle ligament injuries happen because the ankle is feeble and inflexible. The best way to guard yourself from an ankle sprain is to reinforce the ankle joints with exercises and stretches so it is able to bear numerous movements and uneven ground.
If you have already have a sprained ankle and are pondering what the best sort of treatment you can do for it now, I would recommend the H.E.M. Ankle rehab System. I’ve found it to be of heavy benefit to my clients and athletes. And even when you are walking routinely again, your ankle will continue to be awfully weak and rigid due to the scar tissue and neuromuscular damage from the injury. H.E.M. Works extremely swiftly ( usually in roughly a week or so ), and directly deals with those issues as well as many other aspects of damage done by the injury. H.E.M. It is very simple and easy to follow and you can easily do it at home in a minute or two a day. As far as I am concerned , it is the best ankle rehab system out there today.
( Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation ), but any tutor or coach knows how ineffective that’s at healing an ankle injury. Remember, ice is only effective for containing swelling and doesn’t do anything to fix your ankle. And rest can never buttress your ankle or remove scar tissue adhesions that will keep your ankle more locked up than before you were injured. So, if you have an ankle ligament injury, have a look at H.E.M. I advise it just because so many folk have asked me about it and I would like to get this information out there to help a much bigger portion of the populace beyond my athletes and clients. Best of luck and health!

And most importantly, just remember that your ankles are critical to the remainder of your body. They’re your foundation for movement and if they aren’t functional, it can very simply cause Problems in many other places in the body. So, get them taken care of properly, as it pays plenty of dividends now and down the road.

Can Foods To Avoid High Cholesterol Be Found On The Free Hotel Buffet?

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 28-12-2009

Recently I was staying at one of the popular hotel chains which offered a free breakfast starting at 6 a.m.. I was looking forward to the free part of the free breakfast buffet and figured there would be a least a couple of healthy choices. Much to my surprise almost every food choice on the buffet was high in cholesterol and/or saturated fat. There was sausage, bacon, eggs with cheese, biscuits, and French toast fried in high saturated fat palm oil. There was high cholesterol/high saturated fat butter guaranteed to send your cholesterol levels through the roof. Wow, this buffet didn’t have one item on my list of foods to avoid high cholesterol! My initial reaction was shock. My next thought was that it is no wonder so many people have problematic cholesterol levels and cholesterol related diseases. As I looked around to see who was clogging their arteries with this great smelling food, no one group really had a monopoly on it. There were the business travelers, the vacationers, and the senior citizens visiting their children and grandchildren.

So you are probably rolling your eyes and thinking what could this hotel have done differently. After all, what do you expect for free! But believe it or not a there could be a number of additions, subtractions or substitutions that could be considered foods to avoid high cholesterol.

Eggs: Recent studies show that the once maligned egg yolk contains about 60 mg less cholesterol than originally thought. It now comes in at somewhere between 213 and 220 mg of cholesterol. While an improvement it is still not a food to avoid high cholesterol. But what if we did away with the yolk? Well that is another story. All the fat, including cholesterol and artery clogging saturated fats are in the yolk. The high protein white has none, but it does give you some minerals and some B vitamins. So if our free buffet consisted of either less yokes or hardboiled eggs (allowing us to separate the fat) it might be possible to turn this high cholesterol disaster into inclusion into our healthful foods to avoid cholesterol category.

Butter me up: Butter fat is very high in saturated fat. One meager teaspoon of butter has (hold on to your chair) 11 grams of fat, 7.1 grams of which are saturated fats (very bad). Butter only contains 3.7 grams of good fats – 3.3 grams are monounsaturated fatty acids and a miniscule 0.4 are polyunsaturated fatty acids.

But did you know there are some healthful butter substitutes that  could actually lower your cholesterol? That’s right, studies show that one to two 1 tablespoon servings of stanols or sterol  margarines a day can lower LDLs by 10 to 17 percent with result showing up in as little as fourteen days. So if you are going to butter me up with a free hotel buffet at least butter me up with healthful foods to avoid high cholesterol.

In summary, there is a long list of foods to avoid high cholesterol such as oatmeal, cholesterol busting margarines, egg substitutes or egg whites, grapes, and nuts just to name few that could be made available to health conscious hotel consumers. If you a frequent traveler or one that only travels occasionally call or write your favorite hotel chain and let them know there are healthy options available.

What Next? Lowering cholesterol, in most cases, is about changing old habits, adopting new healthier habits, and enlisting the help of convention medications such as statins or natural cholesterol reducing remedies  if needed. Put simply, this basically means finding ways to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decreasing LDL (bad cholesterol levels). Certainly the aforementioned statin drugs (along with foods to avoid high cholesterol) will be one of your options but they do carry a number of serious label warnings. The side effect risk have made natural cholesterol reduction supplements containing such beneficial ingredients as lecithin oil, pumpkin seem oil, D-limonene, phytosterols, and antioxidants such as selenium, theaflavin, and tea catechins an alternative treatment option worth considering.

How you Can Heal Ankles and Sprains

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 27-12-2009

About 25,000 people experience a sprains in their ankles each day. And do not think that ankle sprains only happen to athletes and basketball players. A sprained ankle is very common with standard activities in non-athletes too. It definitely can and often does happen in most physical activities, but can also happen by walking on uneven ground, misstepping, tripping or stepping on an object and so on… They occur to people of all ages : youngsters, teenagers, adults and the old.
And usually, they are non-contact wounds, which means the ankle just twists because it is not strong enough or flexible enough to withstand the force of your movement on smooth or uneven ground. Why? Out ankles have become extraordinarily week, thanks to the soft cosy shows we wear and the even ground we usually walk on. Our ankles used to be forced to carry us over uneven and natural ground, but not anymore. And the result is a lot of ankle sprains.
I strongly suggest avoiding R.I.C.E. Look, ice is only effective for the 1st 36-48 hours as a rule. What then? If ice is now not effective at containing swelling, then rest alone isn’t going to get you better. Yes, rest is crucial to help the healing process, but it is not the healing process itself.

correct healing involves actively doing something to cure the ankle joint. You will see a big difference in mobility once you get back to life and sports. You have to actively rehab ankles and sprains so they heal quickly and properly.

So, what do you have to do? I have counseled a system called H.E.M. For my athletes that I train. For bad sprains, it can take up to two weeks, but keep in mind without H.E.M, those wounds would sometimes take up to 8 weeks for a good recovery. My sportsmen are at all levels, from high school to pro and they need an approach that works efficiently and speedily. And in my experience, the exercises in H.E.M. Are high quality and help protect them from injury. When a person does injure their ankle, I put them on H.E.M. And they’re sometimes back to sports within 1-2 weeks.
Now, I shake my head at the folly of this sort of thinking. That just makes the ankles weaker and weaker and puts that in danger for more ankle injuries as well as knee and back injuries. I’m hoping this is beneficial. If you would like to find out more about H.E.M, click the link below :

Freedom’s Door, A Doorway to Spiritual Freedom From Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 26-12-2009

Freedom’s Door is in Kelowna offering Hope, Healing and Wholeness for Men with Addictions.

Freedom’s Door is a non-profit registered society that uses the Twelve Step program and Christian principles to rehabilitate men struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction in the Okanagan Valley and Kelowna, BC area.

The Freedom’s Door program gives men the strength and faith they need to overcome their addictions and enables them to find a stable, fulfilling future as positive, contributing members of society. During the program, participants live in one of the four safe, clean, encouraging homes operated by Freedom’s Door.

Their quest is to help addicts find freedom under God to grow in His likeness and image.

What is the Freedom’s Door Recovery Program?

Their program is built around three phases of Drug and Addiction Recovery. During each phase, participants live in one of the four homes which Freedom’s Door owns and operates that allows them to house up to 30 men who are participating in their program. Their homes offer a clean, safe, nonjudgmental, supportive environment for men seeking recovery. The facilities are operated by people in recovery, under the care and leading of God and the guidance of the Freedom’s Door society. Their doors are always open to any man seeking a new way of life, and they welcome the men into their homes with open hearts.

The first phase of the recovery program is “Understanding the Problem”, and in the first four to six weeks of the program is a grounding phase which participants are encouraged and stabilized physically and mentally. They begin working through the Twelve Step program and learn to recognize the powerlessness and unmanageability of their lives and their need for God.

During this phase, men are also evaluated for special needs counselling for anger management, grief, mood and mental disorders, and life skills training.

The second phase of the recovery program is “Learning Life Skills”, and in the next 8 to 12 weeks, as participants continue working through the Twelve Steps, they are introduced to programs such as daily group therapy and one-on-one counselling. Usually 6 to 12 weeks long, these programs are specifically tailored to individual needs. Participation in multiple programs may be necessary to achieve success in the recovery process.

The third phase of the recovery program is “Building on the Foundation”, an ongoing reintegration phase designed for men who are ready to re-enter society’s mainstream. During this phase, counsellors at Freedom’s Door help the men access community resources to enhance their educational and career opportunities and encourage them to develop and use a support group of their own. Ongoing group and individual counselling are also available through this long term support phase.

Addiction is not a hopeless condition from which there is no recovery. Freedom’s Door believe that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.

If you need help in your battle with addiction, contact them at Freedom’s Door.

Freedom’s Door is funded primarily by private donations. They need your support to help free men from their addictions. Medical Alert System For Seniors: Be Sure To Get The Right Personal Response Service

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 25-12-2009

The number of seniors who are living alone continues to climb.  Many live alone by choice and want to remain independent. Others live alone by necessity. Either way, maintaining health and security is a continual challenge.

A common problem that seniors living by themselves face, is that their families might live too far away to be of any help in case of an emergency. Or, if they do live in the area, they may be away from the phone if you tried to reach them. A trustful neighbor is a definite asset, but then again, he or she may not always be available.

If you want an additional blanket of protection for yourself, look into obtaining a medical alert device to summon assistance in case of a medical emergency. This device can be worn as a necklace, wristband, or clipped to a belt.

All you need to do is push the button and that will connect you to an operator who can assist you and summon help. However, as in most everything else, all senior emergency alert systems are not created equal. The following tips can help you choose the right system:

1. You want a system that works if you need it and you want to have access to trained professionals who can help you 24/7. You want to be connected to knowledgeable people who are actually trained employees of the company you are with. We’ve all had experiences with outsourced services. Not quite the same are they?

2. A reputable company will give you a money back trial period and you are not locked into a long-term commitment at any point. That way, if the service is no longer needed, you simply cancel with no penalty.

3. You want to be sure, if any repair or replacement of equipment is needed, there is no extra charge to you. Also, your company should check your equipment on a regular basis to make sure everything is working properly. They can do that by sending a silent signal to your unit. They don’t have to bother you.

4. Beware of any up front additional charges. Some companies will tell you there is no long-term commitment, but then will turn around and charge you for two or three months service anyway.

5. You want a service that charges a fair and honest price for their medical alarm button system.

Watch out for the bargain basement stuff as well as the companies who are over-priced and want you to pay for their advertising costs.

Medical alert assistance is an invaluable service that is there when you need it. Like insurance, you hope you don’t have to use it, but it’s well worth the nominal cost, for the protection and the peace of mind it provides. A good senior medical alert system is the companion that’s always there for you.

Donald J. Johnson is a senior with interests in topics that affect and are of value to other seniors.
