You know exercise is good for you – but do you know how good?

Exercise

The road to health does not involve the cultivation of enormous muscles. Innumerable systems of exercise have been exalted as leading to healthfulness. All sorts of extraordinary springs, bicycles, walking machines, dumbbells, and similar apparatus are alleged to lead the user directly into vim, vigor, and vitality, the three objectives of the physical culturist.

Exercise is a means of stimulating the action of the muscles, improving the co-ordination of nerve and muscle, and improving the circulation of the blood. The chief value of exercise is to stimulate the general chemistry and physiology of the body through its effect on the circulation and on elimination. That’s why a healthy person feels better after exercise.

Everyone should have sufficient strength of muscle to carry on the ordinary activities of life, and to permit some exceptional use in time of emergency. For young people exercise has the value of stimulating body growth. Competitive sports of a vigorous kind, such as running, tennis, handball, football, and baseball, are useful, but should never be tried by those not physically fit to undertake them. Among muscular activities suitable to people of all ages are swimming, walking, golf, horseback riding, fishing, and gardening. These sports cultivate endurance and grace. They may not make the heart beat faster, but neither will they make it hesitate or stop. Before undertaking any kind of strenuous physical activity let your doctor determine the capacity of your heart.

Here are the proper amounts of muscular activity for people of various ages: four hours of muscular activity at the age of five years, five hours daily from the age of seven to nine, six hours from nine to eleven, five hours from eleven to thirteen, four hours from thirteen to sixteen, three hours from sixteen to eighteen, and two hours from eighteen to twenty.

One authority has said that one hour should be given daily to activities involving the use of the large muscles of the body after twenty years of age, and that anything less will result in physical deterioration.

Effects Of Exercise

Just why do we exercise? People who do not exercise do not have positive health. They do not seem to have the vigor, vim, and vitality of those who take a reasonable amount of exercise. The muscles of our chests and hearts and of our bodies generally need a certain amount of activity in order to give them a factor that is called “tone.” Tone includes the ability of a muscle to respond when called on.

Exercise increases the circulation of the blood, and thus aids nourishment of the individual cells of the body. Improved circulation also helps, to remove waste material from the body. The proper circulation of the  blood is related to the regulation of the heat of the body.

Exercise also increases the depth and rate of breathing, thus giving   the red blood cells more oxygen to carry, and helps to eliminate the waste carbon dioxide from body.

Following a reasonable amount of exercise in the open air, the body feels refreshed and not exhausted. With such refreshment comes the relaxation that is exceedingly important for rest and good mental hygiene.

The Muscles

If carbonic acid and lactic acid accumulate in muscle, the muscles become acid in their reaction. If lactic acid accumulates in considerable amounts the movement of the muscles will stop. Oxygen is required to aid continuous movement of the muscles. When oxygen comes in, the lactic acid disappears, the glycogen accumulates again, and the muscles become alkaline instead of acid. Large amounts of oxygen are necessary for continuous work by the muscles.

A person who is doing hard muscular work requires ten times more oxygen than he needs when he is resting. The extra oxygen, which is provided by speeding up the circulation, increases the rate of breathing and sometimes raises the pressure of the blood in the blood vessels.

During exercise the pulse rate becomes more rapid, the blood pressure rises, and more blood goes through the tissues. The amount of increase depends on the rapidity and continuity with which, and the length of time during which, the muscles are being used.

In addition to the value of exercise for improving the general health, there is its value in improving the condition of tissues that have been weakened by disease. Therefore, restricted exercise is prescribed for people who have such conditions as heart disease or high blood pressure. These exercises must be controlled by trained attendants, so that the sick person never becomes fatigued, exhausted, or subjected to over exercise.

Serious harm, at times even death, has resulted from having a doctor tell such patients casually that they need exercise, without specifically prescribing the character and the amount. The tragedies of the handball and tennis courts and the golf course bear eloquent testimony to this fact.

Blood Pressure

The blood pressure averages from 110 to 120 above the age of twenty years and up to the age of forty. From ten years to twenty years it averages about 100.

Exercises of strength, such as weight-lifting, will raise the blood pressure. Exercises of speed, such as tennis or speed-swimming, will cause the blood pressure to rise somewhat less rapidly and to return to  normal more slowly.

When the blood pressure of a woman who had run up three flights of stairs in forty-five seconds was measured, it was found to have risen forty points. In exercises of endurance, such as thirty-six holes of golf, a long hike across the country, or a slow bicycle tour, the blood pressure will not rise as high as it does in speed exercise. At the end of the trip it may actually be lower than ordinary.

Breathing

Breathing also varies according to the nature of the exercise. Training in breathing makes the difference between winning and losing an athletic event. In the short dashes the racer breathes normally through the time when the starter says, “On your mark.” At the order “Get set” the sprinter will take a breath and hold it until the gun indicates the start.

He will retain this breath until he is underway. Better sprinters hold their breath longer than those who are untrained.
Swimmers mostly shorten the time when the breath is taken in and given out and increase the rate of breathing with the rate of the stroke.

The average person breathes from seveI1teento twenty times per minute. Women breathe a bit more rapidly than do men. All of us breathe more rapidly when standing than sitting. The amount of air taken in with a single breath averages three quarts for a grown man, two quarts for a grown woman.

Superstitions About Exercise

Many peculiar devices have been developed for producing expansion or development of various portions of the body. Some contend that breathing exercises, which will greatly increase the expansion of the chest, are beneficial to health and long life. Actually the evidence shows that most such exercises are more harmful than beneficial.

Increased work brings increased need for oxygen and more and deeper breathing. Young people who participate regularly in a certain amount of wholesome physical activity, including ordinary games and competition, swimming, tennis, walking, rowing and bicycle riding, will not worry about their rate of breathing.

Large lungs and vital capacity developed beyond the usual needs of the body mean that much of the tissue concerned will not be called on enough of the time to be helpful. Unused tissue tends to become infiltrated with fat and to become weak. This happens to the man who develops tremendous muscles and an enlarged heart by exercising during youth, and then gives up all exercise suddenly as he gets older.

Young people need more exercise than do older ones, because their bodies are growing. They, therefore, take in more oxygen and give out more waste matter than does the ordinary adult. Training improves an athlete and the quality of his performance.

Training helps to co-ordinate the muscles, so that they give a better performance without using up as much energy as might otherwise be required. The danger of exertion may be overcome if boys and girls will be careful to warm up slowly before any activity, exactly as athletes do before football games or track meets. The warming-up process enables the body to reach its maximum requirement and prevents the short breath and discomfort which usually precede what athletes call the coming of the “second wind.”

Training increases the vital capacity-that is, the amount of air that can be handled by the lungs. The average athlete has a capacity of four to five quarts of air, in contrast to three quarts for the non-athlete. The increase in endurance resulting from good physical training is shown by the fact that the onset of fatigue is delayed. Most important in training is practice in using the correct form. Dancing is exercise, but not a graceful one until you learn the steps.

Spinal Fusion surgery to relieve low backache

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 09-01-2010

Low Backache, also called low back pain or Lumbago, is one of the commonest ailments seen amongst the general population. Low back pain may be caused by various reasons and the   underlying causes can be complex. Spinal Fusion surgery is considered the treatment of choice for patients with conditions like Degenerative Disc Disease, Spondylolisthesis, deformities like kyphosis, scoliosis and other conditions which result in severe pain and inability to function.

Fusion is actually a surgically created solid bone bridge between two or more adjacent, usually freely mobile bones. A spinal fusion is a surgery that is done to link together two or more vertebrae. The procedure helps in creating stability between spinal vertebrae and restricts the motion between the vertebral segments.

The spine is made up of number of vertebral bones stacked one on top of the other. In between the vertebrae are discs which lend mobility to the spine and act as shock absorbers. On the back side, there are two small joints at each level – called facet joints. This type of structure allows one to bend and rotate in different directions.

Though there are many approaches to spinal fusion surgery, all the approaches involve disc removal and adding bone graft to an area of the spine to set up a biological response that causes the bone graft to grow thereby creating a solid bony bridge across the two vertebrae, and thus stopping the motion at that segment. By doing away with movement, previously painful segment is made pain free.

The spinal fusions can be done either at single or multiple levels of the spine.

Short Segmental Spinal Fusions are generally done at one or a few levels of the spine. They are performed to stabilize both acute and chronic spinal instabilities, ranging from fractures and disc extrusion to chronic instabilities like degenerative changes in the disc, ligament or cartilage.

Long fusions, performed across many levels can be done to correct deformities such as scoliosis or kyphosis.

The different types of spinal fusion procedures are:

  • Posterolateral Gutter Fusion
  • Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion
  • Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion
  • Anterior/ Posterior Spinal Fusion

These spinal fusion surgery procedure options are chosen on the basis of the underlying cause of the low back pain.

17 Habits Of Thin People

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 08-01-2010

Imagine the freedom thin people have to eat anything at any time they wish to eat.

“Aren’t they worried about chances of some disease? How do they maintain to be slimmer always? Do they have any secret habits behind this? Are they thin by nature or have they adopted any peculiar workout to become thin always?”

Well, here you will find some interesting information about the habits of thin people.

These are not something very different from what normally people do. But skinny people might do things differently than a normal person does. Let’s take a look at those habits.

What do thin people do?

1. Completely avoid snacks

Eat three meals in a day. It can include lean protein, fresh and useful vegetables, a good amount of grains etc. Having a well balanced meal without any fatty snacks in between is what they usually do.

2. Water is the primary and most preferred beverage

Our body needs a plenty of water to keep our cells hydrated.

There is no such replacement for water. Drinking tea, soda etc are never good replacements for what water provides to our body.

Almost 80% of our body is in liquid form and drinking pure water makes sure that our body temperature is kept balanced.

3. Never worry about their body weight

This is one of the main reasons that stop you from freely eating your choice of food. Instead of worrying about your weight, start eating in an enjoyable manner which can make you healthy and active.

Always think positively by saying yourself that, ‘I am healthy, I have a fit body and I am at my right weight.’

4. Always eat Breakfast

Being the first meal of the day, it is never a good idea to skip breakfast.

Breakfasts jumpstart your day by ‘breaking the fast.‘ It is very significant to have this meal even at your workplace, at your home, the farm, at office, or in school.

Eating a healthy breakfast keeps you set for the rest of the day.

5. Do not skip meals

Naturally thin people never skip meals, especially breakfast.

Have you ever skipped your meal expecting to lose your weight?

If so, keep in mind that you are inviting some diseases your way! Skipping a meal and keeping your stomach empty is harmful for your stomach and its digestive system.

Moreover, the next time you eat after a skipped meal, you have all the chances to eat more food which in turn increase the calories.

6. Concentrate and enjoy the meal

If you notice you can see that skinny people do not do any other activity while they eat. This takes away the entire fun and enjoyment of your food [conscious eating].

7. Know when to eat

Thin people are usually softer. They do not allow any one to spoil their mood. They do not let anyone else down. And they stick to their 3 time meal schedule.

As in some cases, the feelings like disappointment, anger or sadness are misinterpreted as hunger and people tend to eat more [emotional eating].

8. Avoid typical foods

Most of the thin people do not like foods that have the possibility of expansion inside the stomach after we eat.

Bread is a typical example for that. Once you eat a few pieces of bread, it gives you a feeling of full stomach.

But in actuality, it gets expanded inside your stomach and gives you that feeling. Thin people try to avoid these types of foods.

9. Keep away from ice creams

Ice creams contain much fat and less taste except that it is sweet. Flavor is very less in ice creams.

It is always better for you to choose some flavored dish, even though it is just a spoon full.

This always has the advantage over the large amount of half-flavored dish you eat.

10. Eat later

Imagine you are hungry and about to leave your office. What would you do? Will you wait until you reach home and eat something?

Or you would stop by at some of your favorite restaurants on the way home? Normally, people who are overweight do not withstand hunger but thin people are always able to do so.

11. Tired to eat

Unimaginable, right? But there are some cases of thin people who find it a very heavy task to spend time to eat.

12. Sleep as in demand

One of the attracting habits of thin people is that they sleep like their body demands.

Just imagine if you are sleepy and hungry at the same time. What would you prefer to do then? Many of the thin people might give themselves a nap first and then eat and enjoy their food later.

13. Eat when they are hungry

Have you ever tried to find the difference between being hungry and waiting for the time to eat? Naturally thin people eat when they are really hungry.

In other words when it is their eating time, they really are hungry. As said earlier, they are hungry because they do not take in any snacks between their 3-meal schedules .

14. Never cheat the mind

“It is enough. I will eat this too even though it is my most favorite dish. Well, let me have this piece too since my friend is insisting.”

These are some typical instances where you might overeat sometimes. This does not happen with most naturally thin people. They stop eating when they think it is enough for them.

15. “I am hungry”

Desire to eat at a given point of time is not hunger. If you are an over weighted person and so much used to eat, it is definite that it would be very difficult to differ the real hunger even if the time is on.

How do thin people handle this situation? They take only a small portion of food. This would be something good to adopt to bring down your weight.

16. Hate when stomach is full

Some studies have shown that thin people do not like the feeling of a full stomach. They think that it greatly affects their following time at office and their work performance.

17. “I know how much to eat”

It is true that you eat only 3 times a day.

What if you get to eat your favorite dish all the time? Would you stop when you have to? This is very much important.

Most thin people are able to stop when they are done with their portion even if it is their favorite food. So the next time you see a thin person pass by your direction, you no longer have to be puzzled why they are thin and look leaner than most of the people around you.

They just happened to employ ordinary measures that all the other thin individuals do. Thin people just happened to approach life differently. In this regard, it is never too late to change yours.

If you want to become thin, you might as well consider what have been doing and try incorporating their healthy habits to your lifestyle. Who knows, after a month or two you will already achieve what you have been dreaming about.

Lastly, don’t be insecure with thin people because sometimes their bodies were just made that way.

Four Amazingly Simply Tips On How To Lower Cholesterol Naturally

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 07-01-2010

In the past five years a great of excellent research has lead to a new level of awareness about the risks of high cholesterol leading to a large number of books, tapes, and food labels all claiming to give you the answer about how to lower cholesterol naturally. Many cooking and home magazines have a least one cholesterol lowering diet recipe per issue, that could save you from the potential health risks of out of control cholesterol levels.

We applaud these efforts and hope that this trend continues. Why? Because how to lower cholesterol naturally is in sink with a natural health approach of prevention and healthy lifestyle choices, to reduce the risk of illness and disease.

While the use of medications, such as statins and bile acid sequestrants should be best left to the discretion of your doctor it is our belief that often times people expect these drugs to do the heavy lifting, and lower cholesterol levels, while they continue to make poor diet and lifestyle choices. This scenario can only end badly, and if you are on this road now this might be a good time to consider making some changes.

What changes should I make!

*If you smoke, consider quitting: The relationship between smoking and cholesterol is undeniable. Smoking increases overall cholesterol, decreases good cholesterol (HDL), facilitates the accumulation of plaque, increases triglycerides in your blood, and constricts blood vessels, thus increasing the risk that a passing glob of cholesterol may block blood flow.

*Exercise: How to lower cholesterol naturally does not have a singular solution and exercise can plan an important role. Most experts suggest 30 minutes of moderate exercise 3 or more times a week. Don’t look at it as a chore rather frame exercise as recreational time by walking, swimming, dancing, or bicycling. But before you dive into the pool make sure that, a: it still has water in it and b: your doctor has given you the go ahead.

*Diet modification: Replace high cholesterol foods with cholesterol healthy foods such as vegetables, oat bran, oatmeal, and margarines containing stanols and sterols. Another important part of how to lower cholesterol naturally is to watch consumption of saturated fats. Saturated fats increase cholesterol levels more than other forms of fat and should be limited to 10 percent of total calories consumed each day.

*Try new recipes: Just because you are cooking healthier doesn’t mean it won’t taste good. Using egg whites or egg substitutes is a good first step. After that you might consider substituting olive oil or canola oil for high saturated oils, substitute soy for meat, bake or broil instead of frying, and substitute vegetables and beans for meat on occasion.

What Next? How to lower cholesterol naturally, in most cases, is about changing old habits, adopting new healthier habits, and enlisting the help of natural cholesterol reducing remedies if needed. Put simply, this basically means finding ways to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease LDL (bad cholesterol levels). In essence you will be making diet and lifestyle changes that not only will bring those problematic cholesterol levels under control but likely will provide additional health benefits as well.

What Is Considered To Be A Normal Cholesterol Level?

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 06-01-2010

We have all had the friend or relative that always asks for the left over fat, drinks unfiltered coffee (raises cholesterol), loves their bologna sandwiches with cheese and mayo, and smokes like a chimney, only to live to be in their late eighties or early nineties. There is an interesting story about two famous brothers of cereal fame, one of ran the most exclusive  health resort of his day and the other figured out how to spend his cereal money by drinking, smoking, and eating as much high fat food as he possibly could. They both lived to be over ninety and died within one year of each other. Perhaps not the story to tell some of you who are trying to find a way to reduce those elevated cholesterol levels to a more normal cholesterol level!

Some people are just lucky or have a hereditary advantage. Or they may eat in a way that raises good cholesterol (HDL). Nevertheless, for the rest of us, especially for those who have a family history of heart attack or stroke, reducing cholesterol levels is a very important part of overall health.

But what are normal cholesterol levels? Cholesterol and triglycerides are blood lipids, or fats. These fats float freely in the blood waiting to catch a ride from one of the two lipoproteins (HDL and LDL). HDL is considered to be good cholesterol due to its density and propensity to take the fats to their intended location. On the other hand LDL drops cholesterol along the way leading to plaque deposits. So maybe our not so health conscious cereal baron had high levels of HDL in his blood!

For adults, a total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dl is desirable and from 200 to 239 is considered borderline high. In parts of the world such as Japan and China where high cholesterol foods are less common, the average cholesterol level is about 150 mg/dl. This accounts for the lower incidence of coronary artery disease.

The total cholesterol level is only considered a general guide with the levels of HDL and LDL considered to be more important. LDL of 100 mg/dl or less is considered optimal with 100 to 129 considered desirable. For HDL 60 mg/dl or more is considered good with 40 to 59 considered borderline. As you can see there might some debate as to what normal cholesterol levels really are. Additionally, finding normal cholesterol levels will vary slightly depending on age, gender, and heredity. Nevertheless, the above numbers and ranges give a pretty fair indication of normal cholesterol levels.

What Next? Lowering cholesterol and achieving normal cholesterol levels, in most cases, is about changing old habits, adopting new healthier habits, and enlisting the help of convention medications such as statins or natural cholesterol reducing remedies if needed. Put simply, this basically means finding ways to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease LDL (bad cholesterol levels). Certainly the aforementioned statin drugs will be one of your options, but they do carry a number of serious label warnings. The side effect risks have made natural cholesterol reduction supplements combined with diet modification a safe alternative treatment option worth considering.

Emotional and Anxiety Problems Aggravates the Obesity Epidemic

Filed Under (Health and Fitness) by admin on 03-01-2010

Emotional Issues

According to Medicalmoment.org obesity is caused by an excessively large amount of body fat or adipose tissues. No doubt overeating is one of the major issues that lead to obesity. However, weight gain or obesity can have a “domino effect” by leading to or causing emotional problems.

Personal frustration from being overweight, peer pressure, not being able to “fit in”, being teased by others and other family issues can cause children to suffer from serious emotional problems. These problems can lead children and even adults to eat “comfort foods” as a way to make up for loneliness, depression, and sadness. This never helps, and only makes the situation worse. Most of these foods we eat during this period are high-calorie food such as chocolate and other sugary foods which will result in weight gain if this eating pattern persists.

Many times this “comfort food” is not a replacement for the regular diet, but is eaten in addition to the regular diet. This is not only overeating but also eating high-calorie food, two of the factors that lead to obesity. The first reaction would be to jump to the conclusion that we would eat less when we are experiencing emotional problems, but in most cases we eat more.

Anxiety Issues

Anxiety can also lead to eating problems either from skipping meals, overeating as a “coping mechanism” or eating mostly high-calorie meals. This also occurs to college students who become overly-anxious about the volume of work that they are required to complete and the pressure that college life creates, especially because they are away from home. This pressure, and changes in eating habits, causes many to gain weight. They stay up long hours at nights completing assignments, or studying, usually eating to stay awake. This is done at a time when the stomach would normally be resting, during asleep. College students who live on campus, usually live on a limited budget, so they eat either what are available in the cafeteria, or eat fast food. Those who live off campus tend to eat mostly fast food rather than preparing healthier meals at home.

Life is a balance of many factors and eating is no different. It is the balancing of calories, diet, physical activities, genetics, metabolism, health, emotions and anxiety issues which adds to the complications. Metabolism rates are higher during the younger years and are one of the factors that children, teens and young adults have in their favor. However, it still requires that they eat healthy and be physically active to maintain a proper weight and build muscles.

The fight against obesity will be a long struggle, and will require educational programs, and a national campaign, involving doctors, nutritionists, and others to help educate parents who can in turn help their children.
